‘King of Bergamo,’ Netizens hail Ademola Lookman’s performance against Fiorentina

Users on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) have showered praise on Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman for his impressive football performance.

Lookman played a crucial role in Atalanta's 3-2 victory over Fiorentina in a Serie A match at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Sunday.

Just before halftime, during stoppage time in the 46th minute, Lookman received a long-range pass on the left wing, dribbled past defenders, and fired a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Earlier in the match, Lookman also provided a precise cross from the left flank, which Mateo Retegui headed in to equalize the score at 1-1 for the home team.

Nigerians took to social media to celebrate Lookman's performance, with some even calling him the future African Best Player.

One user, Boluwaji Jegede, tweeted, "First of his name! King of Bergamo! Next to the iron throne of CAF Golden baller of the Super Eagles."

Another user, JJ. Omojuwa, posted, "Far and away. Up and above. African Footballer of the Year. Ademola Lookman!"

A user named Smallie chimed in with, "Incoming African footballer of the year Ademola Lookman," while another user, Mbah, praised Lookman’s performance with, "One goal, one superb assist. Good day at the office for Ademola Lookman."

The 26-year-old forward, who was recently included in the 30-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d'Or, has had a standout season for both club and country. He is the only African nominee this year, surpassing last year's nominee Victor Osimhen and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.

Lookman’s Ballon d'Or nomination follows his historic hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final, where Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to claim the title.

He also excelled in the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals and assisting Nigeria’s run to the final in the Ivory Coast.

In an interview on the Counter Attack Podcast, Lookman expressed his excitement about the Ballon d'Or nomination while on international duty, saying, "It's a special, special feeling, man. I was on a bus returning from training when I saw a post about my nomination. At first, I was surprised, but as I scrolled through the notifications, I realized it was real."
