Ortom Urges End to Benue PDP Feud: Calls for Unity
On Monday, former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom called for an end to the internal strife within the state's chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Following recent ward congresses, the Benue PDP has been plagued by factionalism and internal disputes, resulting in a series of suspensions and counter-suspensions among party leaders. Last week, a faction loyal to Ortom suspended Benue PDP Chairman John Ngbede, along with the Secretary and Organizing Secretary. In response, the faction aligned with former Governor Gabriel Suswam issued a suspension against Ortom.
Ortom's suspension led to his supporters demanding an investigation into Suswam’s alleged anti-party activities. In response to the ongoing turmoil, the PDP’s National Working Committee intervened, dissolving the State Working Committee and appointing a caretaker committee to manage the party's affairs in Benue.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Akase, Ortom emphasized the importance of unity and reconciliation within the party. He acknowledged that political disagreements are natural but stressed that they should enhance the democratic process rather than hinder it. Ortom reiterated his longstanding respect and friendship with Senator Suswam and expressed his commitment to resolving conflicts amicably for the benefit of the party.
Ortom called on all PDP members to focus on the party's shared goals and continue their commitment to peace, praising the members' conduct during recent ward congresses. He urged support for the newly appointed State Caretaker Committee to ensure the party’s success in upcoming local and state congresses.
