Intoxicated driver hits two pedestrians in Lagos
On Saturday, a driver suspected of being intoxicated struck two pedestrians near Mayfair Garden in the Epe area of Lagos State, causing them severe injuries.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), reported that LASTMA operatives came to the aid of the injured pedestrians.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed that the accident, which occurred around 6:30 a.m., involved a Toyota Camry (YAB 133 JY) and a commercial LT Bus (SMK 84 YB). The two pedestrians, who sustained serious fractures to their legs and arms, were rescued from the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
According to Taofiq, initial investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Camry lost control due to alcohol consumption, hitting the pedestrians as they crossed the expressway with their luggage. Following the collision, the driver continued at high speed and crashed into the commercial LT bus, which was at a nearby bus stop.
The statement also noted that LASTMA's monitoring team ensured the injured pedestrians were taken to Akodo General Hospital and subsequently arrested the driver of the Toyota Camry along with two passengers. They were handed over to the Elemoro Police Station.
Giwa mentioned that both vehicles were promptly removed from the expressway by LASTMA to restore traffic flow towards Epe. He expressed his sympathy to the victims and stressed the importance of road safety, urging all drivers, including those operating commercial buses, to avoid driving under the influence.
