FG pays NiMet workers’ 45-month minimum wage arrears
The Federal Government has settled the outstanding 45-month minimum wage arrears owed to employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). This was disclosed in a statement released on Monday by Okechukwu Nwokoro, the Secretary of the NiMet Union Joint Action Committee.
The arrears, which had been pending since 2019, had caused significant tension between NiMet management and its staff, leading to frequent disputes with labor unions. Earlier this year, the situation almost escalated into a strike planned for May 20, 2024. However, the strike was averted at the last minute due to the intervention of the House Committee on Aviation Technology and the Senate counterpart.
An agreement was reached on May 19, 2024, during a special session organized by the House Committee on Aviation Technology, chaired by Abiodun Akinlade, with the participation of NiMet management and union representatives.
NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving the payment, acknowledging that the issue predated the current administration. Anosike also thanked the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, as well as other government officials involved in resolving the matter.
The NiMet Union Joint Action Committee also expressed appreciation to Tinubu, Keyamo, and others for their efforts in ensuring the payment. The unions noted that this action has significantly alleviated the financial difficulties faced by NiMet staff and renewed their commitment to serving the nation effectively.
