Diaspora group condemns killings in Benue

The Idoma Association USA, a socio-cultural organization representing Benue South Idoma natives residing in the United States, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence affecting their ancestral communities in Benue State. The group specifically highlighted the alarming rate of killings in Apa, Agatu, and other parts of Idoma land.

In a statement issued on Saturday during their 28th annual convention in New Jersey, the association's President, Dr. Edwin Ochai, addressed the impact of insecurity on community development. He emphasized that such violence not only leads to loss of lives but also creates fear and instability, which hinders progress.

Ochai stated, “These acts of violence undermine the safety of our people and threaten our community’s development. It is crucial to tackle this issue with the urgency it deserves, as a secure environment is essential for economic prosperity and social progress. Without safety, our goals for economic growth and attracting investment remain unattainable.”

He further urged Idoma expatriates to invest in local youth, stressing that engaging young people through education and job opportunities is vital for the community’s future. “Investing in our youth is investing in the future of Idoma land. We need to create programs that will empower them and guide them away from negative influences.”

In his virtual address, the Och’Idoma of Idoma, Elaigwu Odogbo, praised the association for maintaining and promoting Idoma cultural identity internationally for 28 consecutive years. He recognized their dedication to their heritage and their continued success in their professions.

Odogbo also lamented the recent resurgence of violent attacks on the Idoma people, which has resulted in numerous deaths and displacement. He expressed gratitude for the financial assistance provided by the Idoma diaspora, which has helped alleviate the suffering of affected communities.

Reflecting on the convention’s theme, the monarch noted that insecurity has had a detrimental impact on the community’s progress and economic growth, as it deters investment and stifles development.

In a video message, Dr. Sam Odeh, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, addressed concerns raised by the association regarding the distribution of state projects. Although he was unable to attend the convention due to ongoing protests in Nigeria, Odeh reassured that the state government, under Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, is committed to addressing the needs of the Benue South Senatorial District and has plans for several upcoming projects in the area.
