Auto Crash in Abia Claims Lives of Two Children and Three Others
Two children and three other passengers lost their lives in a fatal auto accident on Sunday involving an Abia Line Network Sienna vehicle and a Mack truck near Umuika Junction on the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway. The Sienna was traveling from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State to Aba in Abia State.
The Abia State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the casualty figures during a press briefing on Monday. ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the incident had been reported to her office and that the accident scene had been visited, with an investigation currently underway.
The Sector Commander of FRSC Abia State Command, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, through a statement issued by Assistant Route Commander C. M. Enyioko, the PRO of the Abia State Sector Command, confirmed that five, not 11 as initially reported, were killed in the crash. The incident occurred on August 11, 2024, at 1:45 PM near Egbelu Mbutu by the Cherubim bus stop in Isiala Ngwa South LGA along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The crash involved a Toyota Previa with registration number BKL 291 ZJ, which collided with an unnumbered stationary Mack truck. A total of 11 individuals were involved, including six male adults, two female adults, and three male children. Four victims, including two male adults and two male children, died at the scene, while three others were injured.
A rescue team from the RS9.32 KM78 Aba Unit Command arrived at the scene within 10 minutes of the incident and conducted rescue operations. The injured were taken to Ronald Hospital, Umuikaa, and the deceased were taken to Mighty Moon Mortuary near Umuikaa Junction.
On Monday, a follow-up by FRSC officials confirmed that one of the injured male adults had succumbed to his injuries, bringing the total death toll to five—three male adults and two male children. Two other individuals, one male and one female, remain injured. The male victim was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for further treatment, while the female victim continues to receive care at Ronald Hospital. Three adults and one child survived the crash without injuries, and the surviving child has been handed over to the Umuikaa Police Station.
