Air Chief Explains Deployment of Aircraft to Gombe Amidst Protests
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, clarified that the Nigerian Air Force deployed aircraft in Gombe State following the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, which was disrupted by unruly elements, necessitating heightened security measures.
He explained that the aircraft were deployed for reconnaissance missions, while the NAF's regiment forces collaborated with other security agencies to restore order.
This information was disclosed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM Edward Gabkwet, in a statement released on Saturday, following Abubakar’s meeting with Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya.
Gabkwet stated, "Air Marshal Abubakar, addressing the recent destruction of lives and property during the protest, emphasized that the involvement of unscrupulous elements made additional security measures necessary. Consequently, the NAF deployed an aircraft for reconnaissance over the city and other parts of the State, with Regiment Forces joining other security services in quelling the unrest."
Abubakar further emphasized that it is the duty of the Armed Forces to uphold the nation's democratic values. He remarked, "Nigeria’s democratic institutions, values, and principles are the bedrock of our nation, and it is the constitutional responsibility of the Nigerian Air Force, along with other military services, to protect and strengthen them."
In response, Governor Yahaya praised the NAF 109 Combat Reconnaissance Group for its role in curbing looting and theft during the protest. He noted that despite the challenging times, the dedication of the NAF and other security agencies has helped ensure that citizens can live with fewer threats. He also assured the Chief of Air Staff of his administration’s commitment to supporting the 109 CRG with the necessary infrastructure to enhance its operational effectiveness.
