Tinubu returns to Abuja after private visit to Paris

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria's capital, Abuja, following a two-week private trip to Paris, France. His arrival at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Int’l Airport around 9:00 pm local time was marked by the presence of top government officials, including his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Among others welcoming him were Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri; and the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi.

Although the purpose of Tinubu's visit was not officially disclosed by the presidency, his departure statement on January 24 indicated a return "in the first week of February 2024." This trip marks Tinubu's third visit to the country and his 14th foreign visit since assuming office eight months ago.

In June 2023, shortly after taking office, Tinubu commenced his foreign engagements in Paris, where he participated in the Paris Summit for the New Global Financial Pact. Subsequently, he attended the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2023, followed by visits to various countries including the United Kingdom, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Benin Republic, India, United Arab Emirates, United States, Saudi Arabia, and Germany.

His return coincides with protests in several states over the escalating cost of living. In Minna and Kano, protesters voiced concerns about rising food and living expenses. In Niger State, women blocked roads demanding government action to address hunger, despite efforts by security forces to disperse the protests.

Tinubu's return also comes amidst increasing cases of kidnapping-for-ransom, currency depreciation, and delays in implementing the student loan scheme promised by his administration. Despite these challenges, Tinubu has directed a special committee to urgently address food shortages and maintain security.
