An unidentified individual lost their life when a truck driver, operating a containerized truck with license plate LSR 901 XV, experienced brake failure and collided with a scavenger pushing a wheelbarrow near Mile 12 Market on Ikorodu Road in Lagos State. The tragic incident took place during the early hours of Saturday.

As per a statement from Adebayo Taofiq, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver, facing brake failure at high speed, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the fatal accident. LASTMA officers managed to rescue the victim from the scene, but unfortunately, the individual succumbed to injuries shortly thereafter.

Preliminary investigations unveiled that the articulated truck driver's loss of control was attributed to a brake failure, leading to the collision with the scavenger on the main carriageway toward Ketu along Ikorodu Expressway.

In the aftermath of the incident, a group of troublemakers assaulted the truck driver. Nonetheless, LASTMA officials, assisted by security personnel, intervened, safeguarded the driver, and transported him to the Ketu Police Divisional Headquarters.

Bakare-Oki Olalekan, the General Manager of LASTMA, urged market leaders to conduct regular safety awareness campaigns, emphasizing the risks associated with using wheelbarrows to transport goods or food items along highways in the state.
