Norway seeks stronger ties with Nigeria on energy

The Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Svein Baera, emphasized the necessity for an enhanced partnership between Nigeria and Norway to bolster energy production. Speaking at an event organized by the Nigerian Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in Lagos to welcome the new ambassador, Baera highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to elevate energy production, vital for economic growth.

The Nigerian Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, a not-for-profit bilateral organization, aims to strengthen social, cultural, and commercial ties between the two nations. Ambassador Baera stressed the shared emphasis of Norway and Nigeria on energy production, expressing the need for both countries to generate sufficient energy to foster economic prosperity, job creation, and community well-being, supporting essential services like hospitals and schools.

Baera mentioned a recent visit to a company delivering solar energy to Nigerian businesses, noting that transitioning to cleaner energy is mutually beneficial. This shift is not only cost-effective for Nigerian companies but also contributes to pollution reduction, improved air quality, and addresses climate change concerns.

Chairman of the NNCC, Mr. Chijioke Igwe, highlighted the existing robust relationship between Nigeria and Norway in areas such as oil and gas, agriculture, renewable energy, and technology. The event aimed to facilitate interaction between businesses from both nations, creating a platform for exploration of opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, and more.

Looking ahead, Igwe outlined the NNCC's plans for the year, which include engaging government officials in the first quarter for discussions on business plans. The chamber intends to host events throughout the year, featuring breakfast sessions where government officials will outline business opportunities in various sectors, fostering collaboration and understanding between the business communities of Nigeria and Norway.
