Multichoice makes U-turn, to transmit AFCON matches on Supersports

Multichoice, the parent company overseeing DStv, made an announcement on Wednesday confirming its decision to broadcast the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament taking place in Ivory Coast. The scheduled dates for the AFCON games are between January 13 and February 11, 2024.

Contrary to a previous statement made last Wednesday, where Multichoice declared its inability to broadcast the AFCON tournament on its SuperSport channels due to the failure to secure broadcasting rights, the company has now reversed its decision. In a turnaround via @DstvNg on Twitter, Multichoice assured viewers that all 52 matches of the AFCON 2023 tournament would indeed be broadcasted on Supersports.

The initial statement had explained that the SuperSport Channel would not air the AFCON 2023 due to the unavailability of broadcasting rights. However, Multichoice clarified that despite this setback, AFCON 2023 games would still be accessible through partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels. The company reiterated its commitment to providing football fans across Africa with unparalleled access to entertainment and football games through DStv and GOtv platforms, encompassing prestigious competitions such as the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and more.

Additionally, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) also revealed its plans to transmit all 52 AFCON matches. This announcement came after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Afro Sports. In a tweet via its X handle, NTA communicated the collaboration, stating, “NTA signs Memorandum of Understanding with Afro Sports for the transmission of 52 matches of the Africa Cup Of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.”
