JUST IN: FG orders installation of CCTV on nine  highways

"The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has given instructions for the installation of surveillance cameras, solar lighting, and security measures on nine highways, which have been granted to private investors under the Highway Development and Management Initiative. In addition, he has formed three committees to accelerate the implementation of this initiative. The objective of the initiative, as agreed upon in May 2023, is to enhance facilities and operations on selected routes, aiming for a revenue generation of over N11.54 trillion within the 25-year concession period. This program operates under a Public Private Partnership arrangement for the construction, operation, and maintenance of these highways. The contractors, however, have not yet commenced work, causing frustration for the minister at a recent meeting with directors. Umahi emphasized the need for the committees to work diligently to meet the expectations of Nigerians in terms of transparency, quality, and efficiency in the negotiations. He also directed a review of the project's scope and financial implications to align with the current economic situation and new policy direction. The concessionaires were urged to adhere to the project criteria and timeline. Furthermore, Umahi emphasized the importance of implementing safety measures such as CCTV cameras, solar lighting, and security arrangements on the roads. The statement also mentioned the formation of three committees: Scoping and Design, Financial, and Due Diligence and Agreement Review, which were established to support the HDMI program. The minister expressed the urgency to finalize the due diligence process and hand over the project sites to committed contractors by the end of March 2024, aiming to minimize bureaucratic delays and move the project forward efficiently."
