How my husband defiled my sister’s granddaughter – Witness

On Wednesday, in the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, a Prosecution Witness named Olayemi Hosa recounted how her husband, Olumuyiwa Adjoto, allegedly sexually assaulted her sister's six-year-old granddaughter at their residence in Mowo, Badagry, Lagos in 2022. Speaking in Yoruba and translated into English, Hosa informed Justice Rahman Oshodi that the incident occurred on April 19, 2022, during the victim's two-week Easter holiday at their home.

Hosa, a trader, stated that she had instructed the victim to greet the defendant on Wednesday morning, and later learned that her husband had given the girl money. Upon returning home from Idumota Market that afternoon, she discovered that her husband had sexually defiled the child. The witness described the victim's demeanor as unhappy and, during an evening outside their apartment, the child revealed the assault, mentioning her father's involvement.

Hosa took the child to General Hospital in Badagry, where a medical examination was conducted, and the doctor recommended a police report for further action. Allegedly, when she reported the incident at Badagry Police Station, the officers initially resisted, and upon reaching the crime scene, they recognized the defendant as familiar to them. Hosa accused the police of attempting to downplay the matter, leading her to contact the Mirabel Centre for assistance.

Mirabel conducted a test, provided a letter to the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, and informed Hosa that the case was in court. However, when the agency checked her file at the Department of Public Prosecutions, it was found empty. Hosa provided copies of the results, which were then included in the file. Under cross-examination, she defended leaving the child with her husband, believing he wouldn't harm a minor. The defense queried the defendant's whereabouts on the day of the incident, but Hosa insisted the child's account matched the doctor's confirmation. The case was adjourned to March 12, 2024, for further proceedings.
