10 die in Kwara road crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a tragic road accident resulting in 10 fatalities around Iyemoja Village along the Olooru-Okoolowo express road in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara.

According to Corps Commander Stephen Dawulung, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 6:40 a.m. on Monday and involved two vehicles, namely a Volvo truck and a Toyota Hiace bus. Out of the 20 individuals involved—comprising 15 male adults, four female adults, and one male child—10 lost their lives, including five male adults, four female adults, and one male child. The remaining 10 male adults sustained various degrees of injuries.

The preliminary investigation by FRSC operatives indicated that the crash resulted from the wrongful overtaking by the driver of the Volvo truck, leading to a head-on collision with the bus. The bus, en route from Lagos to Sokoto, was conveying 17 passengers and goods, while the truck, heading from the north to Lagos, had three passengers.

The tragic incident unfolded along Olooru-Okoolowo Road, near a village known as Iyemoja. Upon receiving the crash report, rescue teams from the Olooru Unit and the Help and Rescue Camp swiftly mobilized to the scene. Injured victims were transported to the State Hospital in Ilorin, while the deceased were taken to the Teaching Hospital mortuary in Ilorin.

The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and extended wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured victims. Commander Dawulung emphasized the importance of drivers avoiding wrongful overtaking and excessive speeding, identifying them as significant contributors to fatal accidents. He reiterated the commitment of the Corps to ensuring the safety of all road users, emphasizing the critical responsibility of drivers to prioritize safe driving practices for the preservation of lives.
