Breaking: NLC, TUC set Nov 8 nationwide strike notice over battering of Ajaero
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its counterpart, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), issued a strike notice to the Federal Government on November 8 due to the recent attacks, abductions, and assaults, including the incident involving the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
During a briefing on Friday, the leaders of NLC and TUC presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government. This includes the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, as well as the Area Commander and other officials, based on allegations of their involvement in the mistreatment and humiliation of Comrade Ajaero and other workers.
It is worth noting that individuals suspected to be state agents and security personnel had confronted Ajaero and other labor leaders, vandalizing their vehicles, causing injuries, and stealing items such as cell phones, money, and ATM cards from the labor leaders and others who had gathered at the NLC State secretariat for a planned protest addressing various labor-related issues.
Ajaero, along with other national leaders of NLC and their counterparts from the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, were present at the state Secretariat in Owerri to protest issues such as unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
The attack and abuse of Ajaero have sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the country. The leaders of NLC and TUC are scheduled to convene next Tuesday to determine an appropriate course of action in response to the attack.
